This love language is notably the most "language driven" of the 5, emphasizing verbal communication as a means of expressing one's emotional state or feelings of appreciation. Words of affirmation often take the shape of compliments or expressions of gratitude, indicating to a loved one that things they do are acknowledged and deeply appreciated. Spoken praise can help people feel seen and heard by their loved ones, further prompting the cycle of love language usage and expression. Words of affirmation can very effectively function as a catalyst for relationship growth, prompting one's counterpart to continue the behavior that has been praised. Sometimes when an individual feels inadequate or unappreciated, the best thing to do to address those feelings is to do so through speech. Explicitly telling your loved one that you appreciate them and everything they do can help to strengthen the relationship between the two of you, validating the efforts that your loved one may be exhibiting to express love in their own way.

With the use of love languages as a tool of affirmation in mind, it is important to acknowledge that spoken words can be very effective in making someone else feel noticed and loved. "Actions speak louder than words" is a subjective concept, as the love language that some people crave is language in itself. Taking the time to tell someone how and why you care about them may have a lasting impact on their day, or even on their perception of your relationship. Transparent verbal communication is one of many essential aspects of a healthy relationship, and trying out words of affirmation on your loved ones can be a simple and effective means of expression.
